Moldoveanu Peak must be on the wish list of any nature and especially mountain lover.
It is the most massive mountain from us, with a height of 2544m, which you reach by crossing meadows, forests and meadows of stunning beauty. If you don’t have more than a day available for the route, you will choose the road that crosses the Valea Rea.
The route to Moldoveanu Peak through Valea Rea is not exactly for beginners, having sections with sustained climbs, which will test your physical condition. However, the route is a memorable one, passing one of the most spectacular waterfalls or the glacial caldera – a place out of stories.
To reach the barn in Valea Rea (Stâna lui Burnei) you will cross 40 km of forest road. It can be crossed with any car that does not have very low clearance in about 2 hours. If you’re not in a hurry, you can enjoy the many camping areas along it.
Arriving at Stâna lui Burnei, you will discover the great waterfall of Vaia Rea, next to another spectacular waterfall, located to the left of the construction.
The ascent to Valea Rea is made on a winding path, which turns towards the end into a sustained climb on gravel.
The bucket of Valea Rea was shaped by the glaciers that dug into the rock, being today a marshy area, with islands of abundant vegetation and waterholes. From here you can admire the Moldoveanu and Viștea massifs, Vârful Roșu and the crest of Vaia Rea. The bucket of Vaia Rea is also the place where the stream that feeds the waterfall of the same name is formed.
The ascent continues to the glacial lake Iezerul Triunghiular. From here, the route will take you to Portița Viștei (2310m). The climb becomes more and more challenging as the dirt and vegetation path is replaced by gravel.
From Vârful Viștea (2527m) you will already see the objective of the route – the majestic Moldovean. From here, the ridge path will take you to a rather difficult area with chains. In a maximum of 10 minutes of increased attention on rocky terrain you will reach the highest peak of Romania.
